About
Difficulty: All Levels. Workload: Light. Suggested duration: 3 weeks. If you follow our suggested duration of three weeks, get ready to invest about 1 hour per week in your training. But remember, you can always go through this intensive on your own paste. Three weeks is just a suggested structure. Shaabi and Raqs Sharqi (Classical Oriental) use pretty much the same movement vocabulary — the difference is not what we dance, but HOW we dance it. Learning to distinguish these styles is essential, because posture, energy, arms, musical phrasing, and overall presentation change depending on the context and the music. Without this understanding, many belly dancers bring Shaabi/Balady posture and mannerisms into their classical Oriental pieces, but carry their Raqs Sharqi style technique (for example, arms) into their Shaabi/Balady songs. This creates stylistic confusion. That’s why this intensive inside the Iana Dance Club is focused on developing stylistic awareness so you can make better choices in choreography, improvisation, and performances in general going forward. Each week, you’ll work with one short combo. First, we’ll explore the sequence through a Shaabi / Baladi mood, and then revisit the same movements through dancing to a classical song lens. This side-by-side approach makes the differences very clear without adding new steps or overwhelming material.
